What is Metal Clay

After taking part in JDMIS' New Metals Technology I, II & III courses, you would have completed a myriad of beautiful eye-catching Metal Clay jewellery pieces by now. Yet there is still more to learn!Further your mastery in this unique form of jewellery making

Experiment with an interesting form of metal work that originated from Japan known as Mokume-Gane. Learn to inlay one metal into another and the considerations taken to ensure these methods of jewellery crafting turn out as beautiful as you envisioned them.

This is the fourth and final part in a series of our improved 30 hour "Experience" programmes that includes more projects and materials to ensure you build the confidence to create professional level jewellery.

Course outline

With experience comes the confidence to work with better quality materials. Master the combination of 22 karat gold into your designs, as well as how to fuse gold-leaf to silver designs to achieve an opulent look without the cost of solid gold. As well as working with the finest materials, mastery of metal clays requires expertise in creating moulds and patterns to produce consistent lines of precious metal jewellery.

Learn how to combine clay and paste types of metal clay to produce more vibrant and 3-dimentional designs experimenting with shape and textures formed by a useful 'build-up' technique. you will also learn additional methods of stone setting and the attachment to fine silver findings. Master the creation of crisp lines and accurate symmetry as well as invisible joins and effective repairs so as to produce quality, professional looking jewellery with sharp features. Your second project involves accurate reproduction of carved patterns and extended pre-finishing techniques to ensure perfection once the design is fired and polished.

Further refine your skills at making accurate, perfectly-sized rings and learn to combine clay and syringe metal clay types to create unique, refined filigree patterns or reliefs on any surface. Fire these designs into solid, lasting pieces of quality jewellery.

Art of Mokume-gane

Instead of working with pre-fabricated syringe-type metal clay, learn the steps to prepare your own custom syringes and custom tips that allow exciting extrusion patterns that form the basis of your eighth project. Add a touch of elegance to this project by permanently setting a half-drilled cultured pearl using professional technique.

Mixed Metal Cintering

Learn about the characteristics of coloured glass and how to properly evaluate and combine glass of different refractive indices to form creative fused-glass centre pieces. Explore different methods of fusing glass using electric and microwave kilns. Following that use your very own glass creations to beautify your silver jewellery! With an emphasis on setting and firing techniques that will not damage the glass components, practice safe handling, fusing and firing and cooling of mixed glass and silver elements. Finally use correct polishing methods to make these glass & silver designs stand out.

Enamelling is an inexpensive and popular method of adding value to jewellery via simulation of inlaid gemstones or the creative use of colour. Traditional enamels however are painstaking and time consuming to apply. Use modern resins and dyes to simulate the depth of traditional enamels using popular modern UV/Epoxy techniques.
