Pedestal prong setting for cabochon gems

Create jewellery settings from raw materials by using half-round and square wires to create secure, multi-pronged settings for cabochon gems of any shape or size.

Rolling square and half-round wires; creating bails

When producing customised settings, often the experienced metalsmith will need to produce their own customised wires. Learn steps for working with sheet and wire to create a wide range of useful metal shapes for jewellery.

Cold connections, rivets, eyelets and creative cold joining options

Many mechanisms and joints require movement and thus cannot be soldered or fused. Learn common cold joining techniques to combine different design parts by rivetting.

Working with pre-made Bezel and Prong settings

Commercial jewellers frequently make use or ready-made jewellery components like heads. Lean what components are available, how they will save you time and money, how best to work with them and when they are not advised.

Basic Filigree Techniques

Discover how to prepare the delicate twisted wires, and then bend and shape them to form intricate designs. You'll learn to master the challenge of soldering these delicate parts together.

Basic Granulation Techniques

Due to a resurgence in popularity of this ancient technique, 'granulation' is incorporated into modern jewellery design. Created by fusing tiny spheres of metal, learn how to achieve consistent sizes and even distribution to create stunning effects.

All important theory and practical demonstrationst will now be delivered through asynchronous (self-paced) online learning. This means that students go through most of the learning at their own pace and convenience via a comprehensive series of online videos and attend live interaction sessions (physical or online) afterwards to receive maximum support and guidance under expert instructors to reinforce the learning of key skills and concepts. Having already completed MS100, you have your own jewellery workbench and basic tools. In this module you receive more valuable intermediate tools needed by the professional jeweller.
